Tanweer Institute strives to illuminate hearts and elevate humanity through the transmission of sacred, authentic knowledge. Rooted in the recognition that true transformation begins with the purification of the self, Tanweer nurtures individuals who embody the responsibility of da’wah—inviting others to Allah—not merely through their words, but through their actions, character, and very presence.

Since its humble beginnings four years ago, Tanweer has earned a cherished place within the hearts, renowned for imparting authentic Islamic teachings while cultivating disciplined, principled Muslims destined to become beacons of guidance and leadership in their own communities. With an array of flexible learning options—including full-time, part-time, and weekend programs—Tanweer opens its doors to seekers from all walks of life, ensuring that the light of knowledge reaches every heart eager to embrace it.

Our Vision: Contributing to the service of the purified Shariah and fulfilling the duty of spreading the noble Prophetic legacy—which cannot be preserved or upheld except through qualified scholars—the institution has established its mission and purpose as follows:

Our Mission: At Tanweer Institute, our mission is deeply rooted in the Prophetic mission, as described in the Qur’an:


“Indeed, Allah has conferred great favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, although they had been in manifest error before.” (Qur’an 3:164)


Inspired by this noble example, Tanweer seeks to continue this legacy by integrating ‘Ilm (sacred knowledge), Suluk (spiritual purification), and Da’wah (calling to Allah)

  • Teaching Sacred Knowledge: We uphold the Prophetic tradition of conveying the sciences of the Sharia with authenticity and precision, connecting timeless principles to contemporary realities.
  • Purification of the Soul: We emphasize personal transformation through sincerity, repentance, and virtuous character, following the Prophetic path of spiritual refinement.
  • Calling to Allah: We inspire students to embody the responsibility of da’wah, inviting others to Allah with wisdom, insight, and compassion.

Through this mission, we aim to nurture leaders who embody the Prophetic example, bringing light and guidance to their communities and beyond.

Our Team

The classes are taught by experts in their respective fields. We are blessed to have highly qualified teachers who studied in various countries such as Yemen, Egypt, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia. We also intend to invite scholars from different parts of the Islamic world as guest lecturers inshaAllah.

Principal: Shaykh Mogammad Philander
Born in Cape Town, South Africa Completed his hifth under his father Shaykh Shaheed Philander Studied in Egypt where he completed his bachelors and honours degree in Islamic Jurisprudence and Law at Al Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt. He enrolled at the University of South Africa where he completed his LLB degree. Founder of Al-Tanweer Institute and Co-Imam at Shukrul Mubeen Masjid in Lansdowne.
Shaykh Salahudeen bin Hussein
Born in the City of Kampala in Uganda Hales from a lineage of Scholars and his father Al Sheikh Hussein is a well known scholar in Uganda who graduated from Al Azhar, Cairo, Egypt. He studied in Uganda and graduated at Bilal Islamic Institute. After completing his degree, he spent an intensive four years studying at the illustrious Dar al-Mustafa for Islamic Sciences in Tarim, Yemen under the guidance of his eminence Al Habib Umar bin Mohammed bin Hafidth He continued his quest for knowledge and travelled to the International Islamic University of Malaysia where he enrolled and competed Bachelor’s Degree in Shariah speciality - Fiqh and Usul al fiqh. After completing his degree in Malaysia, he travelled to South Africa to do his Honors in Religious Studies at UCT. Currently, he is assistant Imam at Mohamedyyah Masjid, Lansdowne and has many da’wah activities and classes.
Shaykh Muhammad Muneeb Johaadien
Born in Cape Town, South Africa He studied Quran and hifth under numerous scholars locally and internationally. And completed his hifth at the age of 12 years old. He studied at Darul Ulum al Arabiya al Islamia – Strand, thereafter travelled to Johannesburg where he studied at Darul Ulum Zakariyya. He travelled to Medina where he enrolled and completed his Bachelors degree in the faculty of Hadith and its Sciences. Upon his return he travelled to Tarim, Yemen where he spent and intensive year studying from the scholars of the valley of Tarim under the guidance of his eminence Al Habib Umar bin Muhammad bin Hafidth. He holds many Ijazat from various scholars and various books. He is the founder of Darul Salaam Hifth school and conducts many weekly classes.
Sayed Ahmad Al khaff
Sayyid Ahmad Al Kaff was born in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and is a descendant of our Master Muhammad ( ﷺ). He is a senior student of Habib Umar bin Hafidh and has benefitted from many senior scholars during his studies at Dar Al Mustafa in Tarim, Yemen, such as Shaykh Umar Hussain Al Khatib. He is an renowned scholar known for his knowledge of Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence), as well as numerous Islamic Sciences.
Moulana Marwaan Cassiem
Moulana Marwaan Cassiem graduated from Dar Al-Uloom Al-Árabiyyah Al‐Islamiyyah in Strand, Cape Town in 2013. He benefitted greatly from his teachers there, especially the late Mufti, Moulana Taahaa Karaan R.A. Moulana Marwaan is known for his excellence in calling people to Allah, and his currently the Co-Imaam at Shukrul Mubeen Masjid, in York Road Lansdowne.
Ustaath Abdul Haadi Hendricks
Ustaath Abdul Haadi Hendricks completed his Hifth under the late Moulana Yunus Essop at Madarassa Al Fallaagh, after which he studied at Darun Naim in Wynberg, followed by Dar Al-Uloom Al-Árabiyyah Al‐Islamiyyah in Strand. He also studied at Dar Al Mustafa in Tarim, Yemen under the guidance of Sayyid Al Habib Umar Bin Hafidh. Ustaath Abdul Haadi is currently the Imaam of Masjid Al Mukarram in Factreton.
Muallimah Amina Hendricks
Muallimah Amina Hendricks completed her memorisation of the Quran at Jameyyatul Qurra in 2017. She further advanced her studies of the various modes of recitation at At-Tanzil institute of Quranic sciences where she thus far completed the Asharah qirā’āt. In 2019 she took part in an international Qur’ān competition in Morocco and later that year took part in the DIHQA international Qur’an competition in Dubai.
Muallimah Kouthar Karriem
Muallimah Kouthar Karriem completed her Hifth at the age of 14. In 2014, she spent six months at Darun Naim, before relocating to the blessed city of Tarim, where she studied for two years at Dar Az Zahraa. Upon returning to Cape Town in 2017, she continued her studies at Dar al-Turath al-Islami for a period of three years. Additionally, Muallimah Kouthar holds an Ijaza in the Hafs recitation of the Qur'an.
